A New World Order

Up until this moment, I'm sorry to say we have endured a charger problem in this household. At one point, everyone had her or his own device charger. Said chargers had both power blocks and USB cords and were distributed equitably to the members of this family. Peace prevailed.

But, over time the situation has deteriorated. Here's the trouble: various members of our group have committed theft. They've taken other people's blocks or cords or both. Then, when confronted about this undesirable behavior, they've denied it and also perhaps hidden the evidence.

It was clear we needed a reset.

Dan and I went to the Best Buy and purchased four new complete charging sets, blocks and cords. Everyone can have a new one. They will be marked with permanent marker. There will be no more theft, lying, or fraud.

This is my solemn vow, and I'll report back.

Conference Calls

In my previous job, I never had an occasion to be on a conference call. In my new job, it happens rather frequently. That would be fine, except it turns out I'm really bad at conference calls. Here are some particular challenges:

  • First, I spend a lot of time worrying about whether I'll get on the call at the right time. What if I have the time written down wrong? What if I've converted between time zones incorrectly? I'll probably have to check the time five or ten times before the appointed moment. I'll also have to google the time zone conversion three or four times. This will happen even though, so far, I've never actually missed a call.
  • Because of the above time problem, I often dial into the call a minute or two early. Then, I awkwardly wait around for the "host." I am never the host. Eventually, the host will get on and say, "Hello?" and I have to announce my presence. Whichever way I say my name always sounds wrong. Should I refer to myself in the third person, as in, "Kathleen is here!" Or, should I offer a cheery "Hello!" with no name? I usually go for the second option, and then inevitably someone else will talk when I'm trying to say my name.
  • Talking at the same time as others is the next, and perhaps most troubling, problem. Whenever I want to say (or feel I should say) anything on a conference call, at least one other person starts to talk at the same time.  A long, "No you!" "No, you!" "I'm sorry!" "Excuse me!" chain follows. I wish I could just listen on all the calls, but sometimes, I'm supposed to weigh in.
  • When I do manage to ask a question or make a statement, the other people on the call don't seem to know who I'm talking to, even though it seems obvious to me. Most recently, someone had to yell at me: "WHO ARE YOU ASKING, KATHLEEN?" In these moments, I'm very glad we're not having a video chat because I'd be blushing and sweating on camera instead of just in private.
Every single time on hanging up from a conference call, I feel I've earned at best a 6/10 for my performance. I'll keep practicing. I'll let you know if I improve.

Getting Organized

planner, bullet journal, day minder

This may come as a shock to you (okay, probably not to anyone who's actually met me in real life), but I'm not naturally organized.  I forget to go to things, forget to put things on my calendar, forget to purchase items at the grocery store that were actually on my list.  And just don't even mention remembering to put the keys on the hook where they belong.  It doesn't matter how much I want to do that or understand the benefits of the system.  I just won't do it, no matter what.

Every once in awhile I get fixated on improving myself and eliminating my poor habits.  Over a year ago, I cleaned my closet and drawers using a little book called the Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up.  Lo and behold, 18 months later my closet is still pretty clean AND I'm still folding my underwear. Amazing.

So, buoyed by the one-time success, I'm currently looking for the planner system that will fix me.  A little googling, and I've become obsessed. It turns out this is like a religion to people.

Have you heard of bullet journaling?

I can't stop looking at links and thinking about systems.  More importantly, I can't stop thinking about the right pens and pencils for the task. The supplies are so pretty.
