DIRECTIVE

One of the highlights of my week is my violin lesson with Master Instructor Jennifer. We're working on some tough stuff these days, namely some movements of Concerto in A minor, Op. 3, No. 6 by Antonio Vivaldi. Here's what Itzhak Perlman, World Famous Violinist, sounds like playing it:

You might want to just listen to that as you read the rest of this post and imagine me playing that piece in my living room.

So, this week, Jennifer gave me some Suzuki Education about Listening.

Did you know that if you listen to something three times a day for eight days in a row, you basically have it memorized? This is important to me because Jennifer makes me perform everything from memory in order to get my stickers, which are supremely motivating for some embarrassing reason, even though I'm 35 years old.

Besides listening to the Suzuki repertoire with frequency, Jennifer said I'm also supposed to listen to other stuff on a regular basis.

"Like, are you listening to jazz?" Jennifer asked. "Are you listening to bluegrass? Are you listening to other high quality classical recordings?"

"You mean like Katy Perry?" I asked.

She gave me a blank square.

"Call Me Maybe? One Direction?"

She caught on.

"I have heard of Justin Bieber," she admitted.

As I was leaving the gym last week, a couple of us were talking about one of plyometrics circuit. I exclaimed that I had no coordination, but I would figure that track out if it took all eight weeks before we change choreography. One of the ladies said she would bring stickers for me next week because she was sure I could get it.

My teacher will record the piece that I am suppose to learn as a video on my phone then I can listen to it constantly in the car. I have been doing that but I am not sure that Jennifer is right that you have it memorized if you listen three times a day for 8 days, either that or I am just slow. I can't wait to hear you play this piece. How about tonight at the family gathering?

I can't believe the progress you've made. Does it hurt your neck sometimes? When Meryl Streep was in that violin movie she said it hurt her neck. #1 Son has made me a jazz fan, which I never thought would happen, in all my born days. Listen to JAZZ!

I love Wall-E.

Good luck with the concerto!

Thanks for the encouragement, peeps! MM, I bet you CAN get that choreography. The sticker will be just the ticket.

LH, my neck doesn't hurt. If you have proper positioning, it doesn't hurt. Meryl probably didn't invest enough time on that. Please give me a playlist for Jazz. thx.

Jill, I don't get what you're talking about about Wall-E. Does something here have to do with Wall-E. I have never seen it. Is the song in Wall-E??
