INDIANS and Inappropriateness

Several challenge bloggers have already written about how we feel about the ridiculous, offensive mascots and nicknames in professional sports, particularly Chief Wahoo of the INDIANS. I didn't know his name until I read it on Leeway's blog. Thanks, Pal!

Today, I dealt with some other types of inappropriateness, like picking your nose and eating the boogers while sitting at your desk. Or sticking your hand in your pants and then smelling your fingers while sitting at your desk. During English class.

My role as a teacher is to help kids form and articulate reasoned and moral ideas. And also to help them not do gross stuff in public. These are equally important goals, probably, for success in life.

That's gross. People shouldn't be gross. The Cleveland Indians nickname is gross as well. I will say more about that in a later post.

To recap: Boogers = gross. Croch sniffers = gross. English class = gross... hey wait. Indians = racist.

I have a few booger pickers in my class, but the finger smelling thing would put me over the edge. That is disgusting.

But Major League was a great movie, and it was about the Indians. So at least there's that.

My guess is these are unconscious habits......so how do you call them to a kid's attention?

Every kid should have a box of kleenex on their desk. And a water bottle. And some hand sanitizer.
And some wet wipes. We need to help them use the tools of hygiene.

I got the kid some tissues and asked him privately what was going on with these habits. He did some explaining. So, I think everything is going to be okay.

Sounds like you handled it perfectly. But don't you like the idea of giving kids a little personal hygiene
tool kit to have on their desks. While they're not listening to us, they could be cleaning their bodies.
